El Cordero de Dios Baptist Church

Introduction
We have been developing a relationship with El Cordero de Dios Baptist Church, located in Zacamil a suburb of San Salvador since the early 1990’s. El Cordero is a small church with a membership of around 40/50 and have a real concern for the many poor communities which surround the city of San Salvador. El Salvador is a country prone to natural disasters, having in recent years suffered from hurricanes, mud slides, earthquakes and there is always the danger of volcanic irruption from the many active volcano’s in the country.

Although the civil war in El Salvador came to an end in 1992, San Salvador is still said to be one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Violence is on the increase and our brothers and sisters are very conscious of the dangers that face them and their families each day of the year.

Church Building
Thanks largely to the support of Cherry Hills Baptist Church in Springfield, Illinois, USA,  El Cordero de Dios were able to start the long awaited project of replacing their existing church building in Zacamil with a new church building on 18 March 2007. If you would like to add a contribution to this project, any amount would be appreciated but £45 (gift aided) or £60 will buy one share in the building.

Church premises
For many years the church have met in a building principally constructed of corrugated iron which was showing serious signs of wear, was extremely noisy, leaked badly  during heavy tropical storms and was very insecure with the result that any item of value had to be taken to a home. Even so the church suffered the theft of benches and the communion table. As a consequence the church have decided to replace the old structure with what they refer to as a “temporary temple” but which will provide a more secure and weather proof church and delay plans for a more permanent building for five years. They would then plan to move the new temporary structure to San Pedro to provide a place of worship in the community and where a plot of land has already been identified.

Following a morning worship service on Sunday 18 March 2007, work commenced as members of the church set to, to dismantle the old church building and clear the site in preparation for the building of the new church.

And see below some of the changes by 8th April - just two weeks into the build!

Surrounding Communities
Although the church are not as involved in the communities on their door step as they are in San Pedro, they continue to maintain contact with the San Roque community, where they have members living and the Emmanuel community where a number of poorer families live on the edge of what can only be described as a vertical drop! Many of these families would be the most vulnerable when the next natural disaster strikes the region.

Music Ministry
As an encouragement to the youth of the church, they have recently been able to acquire some musical instruments and PA equipment. This has enabled them to introduce a different music style into their church services.
